Dr. Osman Sümer, expert in vintage
Montblancs and vintage pen repair.
3. Elections we need people to run the club or nothing happens
4. Dues we also need money to run the club.
1. MEETING DETAILS:
The next meeting will be on February 20 at 1741
Technology Drive, Suite 260, San Jose, right by
the San Jose Airport. This is an office building,
and private space which is donated for this
meeting courtesy of Dave and Joanna Snyder (and thanks very much
)
Our normal meeting times are 11:00 to 2:00. But
because of our special repair seminar, we will have the space until 5:00 or so.
The meeting schedule will be:
1. Buy, sell, or trade for the pen(s) of your dreams (our normal meeting).
2. Elections.
3. Special session with Osman Sumer.
2. SPECIAL GUEST LECTURE:
Here is some information from club members Joyce
Levy and Rick Propas, who have arranged the session with Dr. Sumer:
=====
On Saturday, February 20, 2010, the Pan Pacific
Pen Club will host Dr. Osman Sümer, widely
acknowledged as the leading expert in vintage
Montblancs, and also expert on Pelikan and other vintage German pens.
In conjunction with the club meeting Dr. Sümer
has agreed to put on an afternoon pen repair
colloquium. He will demonstrate both basic
repairs, and the use of lathes for major
projects, such as repairing cracks in cap-lips
and replacing cracked inkview windows.
Osman will have some interesting German pens to
show and sell. He will also bring copies of Jim
Marshall's pen repair book with the chapters he
authored on repair methods for German pens. There
will be a free handout for attendees on the
repair of vintage piston filling and safety pens.
Dr. Sümer may even be able to accommodate some
repair projects on-site. If you are at the Los
Angeles Pen Show (the week before) that would be
a great time to get him a pen that you want to
ask questions about at our meeting.
=====
Thanks to Joyce Levy and Rick Propas for
arranging this session. If you have questions on
this part of the meeting, please contact Joyce
(jlevyesq@...) or Rick (rickpropas@...) directly.
I can tell you that as a long time member of the
club, this is the first colloquium we have ever held
3. ELECTIONS:
The club has three officers:
President arranges for the meeting location,
signs the contracts (all fees are reimbursed by
the club from our dues.) Arranges for food at the
meeting. Some of our past presidents have done
all of this by themselves, and some have asked other members for help.
Our current President, Greg McKinney, has said
that he cannot do this next year due to time
commitments at work, so we need another person to
run. Please contact Greg directly if you have any
questions about the job or the time required.
Treasurer Manages the money. Our current
treasurer, Syd Saperstein, said he is willing to serve for another year.
Secretary Keeps the mailing list updated, and
mails out and posts meeting and other
announcement. I am willing to do this for another
year, unless someone else would like to take over.
We need all three officers for the club to
continue to meet no officers, no meetings.
4. DUES:
Dues are $30/year. This pays for 3 to 4 meetings
a year, and food at the meetings. Most of our
meetings are in space that must be rented, and of
course food isn't free. The club has no formal
organization (we are not a corporation, etc...)
so dues checks should be made payable to our treasurer, Syd Sapperstein
Looking forward to seeing you all there
.

Greg McKinney (gergyor@...)
